" Preserving the Oral Histroy

of the Dakota Presbytery"

Project Overview:

Much of the history of the American Indian is passed from generation to generation orally with little being written down. This is the situation of the Presbyterian churches that have been established on the reservations of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota tribes located in Montana, North & South Dakota, and Minnesota. Much of this history will be lost as the elders of these churches pass into eternity.

Purpose & Goal:

    • Video record the oral history of individuals, thus preserving their stories of growing up Indian and Christian.
    • Video record the oral history of Presbyterian reservation churches, thus preserving the stories of white and Indian missionaries to the reservations and the establishment of each church.
    • Preserving the history, culture, and spirituality, of the Dakota Presbytery
